Relocating with Resilience: Moving as an Amputee

This year, I made a big move—literally. In 2025, I packed up my life and relocated to Nashville, Tennessee. Moving is never easy, but doing it as an amputee adds an extra layer of challenge. From packing and lifting boxes to navigating a new city, I had to approach this transition with patience and adaptability. But if there's one thing I’ve learned as an amputee, it’s that we find ways to keep moving forward—no matter what.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that preparation is key. I made sure to have my prosthetic supplies in order, planned rest breaks during the move, and leaned on my support system when I needed help. There were moments of frustration—like when I underestimated how exhausting it would be to get settled—but I reminded myself that every challenge is just an opportunity to grow stronger.
One of the trickiest parts of moving was figuring out my new environment. Simple things like finding an accessible gym, learning where the best walking trails are, and even adjusting to a new grocery store layout took time. But instead of seeing these as obstacles, I approached them as part of the adventure. Each step, no matter how small, was a victory.
Now that I’m here, I’m excited for what’s ahead. Nashville has a vibrant energy, and I can already see ways to connect with the amputee community here. Whether through adaptive sports, advocacy work, or just meeting people with similar experiences, I know this move will open new doors. This is more than just a change of location—it’s a new chapter full of possibilities.
Moving has also reminded me how important it is to ask for help. As amputees, we often pride ourselves on being independent, but that doesn’t mean we have to do everything alone. Whether it was friends helping me load boxes or new neighbors offering recommendations, I saw firsthand how community makes all the difference.
If there’s one thing I want to share with anyone facing a move as an amputee, it’s this: Take it one step at a time. Moving is tough, but so are we. We adapt, overcome, and keep pushing forward—because nothing is outside our reach.
"All is well; every situation will turn out for my higher good, and I'm at peace with it."
